Playing Through The Pain

Last night' show was really difficult. My back was really hurting so I tried to hold pretty still as I played. There are some songs in the show that were rough on my back before the accident, and as they would come up I would think, "uh oh, here we go."

I've really got to see a doctor, cause I don't know if I can continue the tour this way. There was supposed to be a doctor last night, but he didn't show up. Hopefully tonight.

So I'm playing the show, rocking gingerly like a geriatric mummy, and I guess I'm putting all my energy into my fingers, because I somehow managed to break two nails. And I've got short fingernails. So now they're all bendy on the keys. Kay is gonna lend me her clear nail polish to strengthen them for tonight. I'm a girl now.

Meanwhile I'm trying to get a copy of the police report for insurance purposes, and the City of Seattle is making it very difficult. They don't do fax. They don't do email. I have to mail a request, and they have to mail the report to my home...despite the fact that I won't be there for a while.

In other news, while we were in Seattle, Kay and Miley both ended up buying the same jacket by accident:

  1. Ouch! Dr. John says to take four over-the-counter Advil, three times a day (total of 12 pills, which is what a doctor would prescribe). That should help with the pain and inflammation.

Or you could wait for a real doctor! I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV.

  2. I don't know if this would help with your injuries, but for the pains you had before you might want to do some stretching exersizes before you go to bed at night and when you first get up in the morning. You don't have to put a lot of time into it. 5-10 minutes is enough to make a difference. Whenever I have back pain that usually helps. Also do some stretches before and after your shows to loosen up your muscles. I don't have any specific exersizes to recomend, but you might want to some kind of web search for stretches that target back muscles. Tai chi usually works for me.

  3. John, I agree. I've been dosing up on the Advil as often as possible. It helps. Of course, it helped even more that I got an awesome massage before the show yesterday. Feeling a lot better since then.

Melanie, good idea. The masseuse showed me some really good stretches that I'm going to try. I was initially worried that they might make me feel worse (cause my back is so oddly delicate), but they helped a lot.

Our drummer, Stacy always stretches before shows. Such a good idea.

  4. For your nails, try Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Balm. Moisturizes and strengthens nails, plus it's great for chapped lips and little cuts... sorry if that sounds like a commercial, but I love the stuff. :)
